Position Description Off-Coil Machine Operator/Overhead Crane Operator

Key tasks and responsibilities of the role:

  • Applying appropriate settings to off-coil machine and determining suitable method and sequence of machine operations including pre-start checks;
  • Producing steel parts for inventory and various jobs, particularly reinforcing bars of various diameters, lengths and shapes using off-coil machines for cutting, bending and straightening;
  • Inspecting produced steel for precision and identifying any need for calibration;
  • Setting guides, stops and other mechanical and electrical controls on machining tools;
  • Operating an overhead gantry crane using a handheld remote control;
  • Loading and unloading of trucks consisting of reinforcement steel bar, coil and accessories;
  • Complying with workplace occupational health and safety policies.


Key skills and experience required:

  • Experience in the steel industry and/or previous experience operating cranes or machines will be looked upon favourably;
  • Knowledge of basic machine terminology and safety procedures;
  • Proficiency in the English language;
  • Team worker who is willing to cooperate with peers and has great communication skills;
  • Holds current High-Risk Work Overhead Crane/Gantry Licence or has a minimum 2 years experience in Overhead Crane/Gantry Operations;
  • High level of motivation, attention to detail with a sense of urgency;
  • The ability to follow safe work procedures, adhering to company policies;
  • The ability to understand, follow and comply with WH&S obligations and can demonstrate a safe work ethic;
  • Ability to work different shifts and overtime.
