Communications and Digital Campaigns Officer

The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union (AMWU) is a union of workers from diverse industries and occupations campaigning for economic, industrial and social justice.

The AMWU prides itself on bold, member-led campaigns, like Streets-Free Summer and Boycott CUB.

We are looking for two energetic and principled unionists to join our award-winning National Communications team.

Responsibilities:  On any given day, your work may include but not be limited to the following:

  • Creating digital content and strategies to support industrial and political campaigns;
  • Designing leaflets, posters, stickers, and merchandise;
  • Developing and actioning member growth and retention strategies;
  • Creating email and SMS content for members;
  • Managing and updating our website;
  • Drafting written material for a variety of audiences e.g. - members, delegates, supporters, and campaign targets; 
  • Capturing and editing member content;
  • Managing and monitoring AMWU social media accounts and coming up with strategies to engage and grow our audiences.

 

Required Skills:

  • A commitment to the Australian Manufacturing Workers Union and the Trade Union Movement;
  • Excellent written communication skills, with the ability to translate complex information into snappy and engaging content;
  • An understanding of the digital media environment;
  • Demonstrated experience in graphic design and/or a willingness to develop these skills quickly;
  • Capacity to embrace new technologies and strategies to deliver outcomes for AMWU members;
  • Ability to multitask and prioritise work flow in a busy environment;
  • Ability to work with a range of people, including elected officials, organisers, members, and delegates;
  • Understanding of the AMWUs membership and the unions target audiences including online audiences;
  • Experience in working as part of team;
  • Creative flair, versatility, conceptual/visual ability and originality;
  • Ability to take instructions and work independently.  

 

Desirable Qualities:

  • Experience working on issues campaigns, and an understanding of how to use strategic communications to further campaign goals;
  • A sound understanding of Australias industrial and political environment;
  • Experience working in the media, communications and/or campaigns field, preferably in a trade union, political or not-for-profit organisation;
  • Experience in managing social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter), and using them for campaign, and/or supporter growth and retention purposes;
  • Experience using the Adobe suite (Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator) to create print and digital content;
  • Experience shooting and editing video content using Adobe Premier Pro or equivalent;
  • Experience using Nationbuilder;
  • Familiarity with digital advertising platforms including Google Ads and Facebook Ads Manager.

Preference is for the successful candidate to work from the AMWU Sydney office, however we will consider working from Melbourne for the right candidate.
