Duties

  • Coordinate the day to day operation of the geoscientific laboratory including the performance of and supervision of analytical testing, maintenance of adequate supplies of testing consumables, chemicals and reagents, and integrity of analytical results by undertaking the quality assurance and quality control of data. 
  • Provide high level technical advice and support to internal and external clients on the suitability of samples for analysis, analytical techniques and analytical results for the geoscientific laboratories. 
  • Provide physical, chemical, mineralogical and descriptive analyses of minerals, rocks, sediments, soils and other suitable materials (including, environmental and man-made samples) using x-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), elemental analyser (for C&S), microscopy and physical properties testing for geology, environmental, geotechnical and geophysical studies, with a high level of accuracy and repeatability.
  • Coordinate and participate in the development and implementation of laboratory policies and procedures, including the Laboratory Operational and Management Plan, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), and hazardous materials procedures, and contribute to a safe working environment as a member of MRT’s Work Health and Safety Committee.
  • Prepare professional reports on analytical results for both internal and external clients.
  • Determine the chemistry, mineralogy, physical properties and nature of various materials, including the identification of asbestos and potential environmental issues.
  • Assist in cataloguing and curating geological specimens and samples and the data input into, and maintenance of, related computer databases. 

Desirable Requirements

  • A Degree or Diploma in Applied Science, in a field relevant to the nature of the work to be undertaken,
  • A Degree or Diploma in geological or environmental sciences, or related fields
  • Familiarity with XRF and XRD software, databases, Microsoft Excel, and Word packages.
  • Experience in preparation of samples, conducting analyses, and data interpretation for XRF, XRD, Asbestos identification and mechanical testing.
