Located in the picturesque Gawler Ranges region of South Australia, and 2.5 hours from Streaky Bay, this well-equipped Merino sheep station totals 1.1 million acres and runs 6,000 Merino ewes under current conditions. Under normal conditions the station has the capacity to run 15,000 Merinos.


Working autonomously, the Assistant Manager with direction from the Station Manager will implement the day-to-day activities involved in running the Merino sheep enterprise whilst following sustainable arid zone pastoral management practices and performing general farm maintenance and improvements.

As the Station Manager is based on another station there is scope in this role for the Assistant Manager to take on more responsibility over time and become the Manager of this station.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist the Station Manager to develop annual strategies for selling livestock
  • Assist in the organisation and planning of shearing operations including contractor liaison
  • Assist with planning and management of key animal husbandry
  • Assist with implementing all the animal heath activities relating to the sheep enterprise
  • Check stock waters and perform maintenance, including the service and repair of water infrastructure and fencing
  • Operate key station machinery including tractors, loaders, motorbikes, and other general plant

Skills and Experience

  • Past experience working on a pastoral operation
  • Experience within a Merino operation, including animal husbandry, and the use of veterinary products (including drenches and vaccines)
  • An interest in Merino sheep breeding and wool production
  • Have an ability to work within an established farm plan, with defined work methods and report on any operational issues
  • The ability to work autonomously
  • Strong maintenance, mechanical aptitude and problem solving skills


  • Post-secondary qualifications relating to agriculture or farm management would be desirable
  • Current unrestricted car licence (HR licence desirable)
  • First Aid training would be advantageous
