The government estimated food waste has cost the Australian economy around $20 billion each year. Australian consumers throw away around 3.1 million tonnes of edible food a year, while there are over 3 million Australians who find themselves unable to afford enough food to feed themselves or their families. Established in 2005, SecondBite was founded by two individuals who could not continue to see good food go to waste while people go hungry. SecondBite is committed to making a positive difference by sourcing quality, fresh nutritious food that would otherwise go to waste and re-distributing it in a safe and timely manner to agencies supporting people in need. In 2020, SecondBite is now a national organization that has sites located throughout Australia’s major cities and have connected with over 1,300 community food programs.
Based out of the Dry Creek site location, this role will ensure the successful daily collection, storage, sorting and delivery of food within legislative and organisational requirements using both internal and external resources as appropriate. The State Operations Manager will identify and partner with aligned agencies and food donors to enable the turnaround of donated food with minimal waste. This role will engage with current food donors, potential local donors and work collaboratively with the National Food Procurement and Relationship Manager to increase food donations in supporting the organization. There will be a need to manage budget and monthly financial reporting while helping to identify and drive cost efficiencies without compromising operational or safety standards. The ability to problem solve, negotiate better outcomes in this fast-moving, dynamic environment is important. The incoming manager will provide leadership to employees to ensure operational requirements are achieved in a timely manner to the standards required.
Skills & Experience The State Operations Manager will often lead a mixed team of regular employees as well as volunteers and work for the dole staff. The ideal candidate will have over 2 years’ experience in handling freight and fleet management along with integrated systems such as Fleetmatics, Netsuite and Microsoft. It is essential to possess a proven track record in supply chain leadership, an understanding of food safety legislation and will have dealt with similar FMCG complexities that are encountered at SecondBite. Using strong communication skills, the State Operations Manager will be able to deliver a strong company vision to all stakeholders including volunteers, drivers, management and charity contributors.
