The Western Harbour Tunnel (WHT) is a major transport infrastructure project that will make it easier, faster and safer to get around Sydney. The project will integrate with public transport, improve travel times and boost reliability for cross harbour trips and the broader network. This new western bypass of the CBD includes over 6.5km of twin tunnels from the Rozelle Interchange, under Sydney Harbour and to the Warringah Freeway. The majority of the project will be deep underground in tunnels, greatly reducing surface impacts to private property, communities and the environment.
Land tunnels will be constructed using multiple road header machines to cut through sandstone at depths of up to 100 meters below Sydney, with tunnelling to take place 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The waterway crossings of Sydney Harbour will be built using immersed tube tunnelling.
