About the business

 

The Cairns Museum is owned and operated by the Cairns Historical Society (the Society), with financial support from Cairns Regional Council. The Society is a NFP organisation established in 1958, with a brief to collect, conserve and interpret the history of Far North Queensland.

In 2017 the Museum re-opened after a substantial renovation and refurbishment, funded by Cairns Regional Council. The Museum now operates 6 days a week, with a FTE staff of 2.8 in addition to the Manager. The Society and Museum staff are assisted by over 90 volunteers, who work in key roles in the Museum's front of house services (guiding, reception, schools program) and back of house (collections management, research services, archives and photographic management).

 

About the role

 

The Museum's current manager is taking a 12-week sabbatical and is seeking someone to act in the role from 17/8/20 - 15/11/20

The Management Committee are specifically seeking someone to lead the Administrative Management of the Museum. This encompasses the strategic, financial, risk and HR responsibilities of the business, as well as staff management, operational support as required and engagement with volunteers.

Tasks

  • Report to the Society's Management Committee monthly on the performance of the Museum and all is programs
  • Lead existing initiatives and projects, in accordance with the Strategic Plan.
  • Ensure the Museum is open and operating safely 6 days a week
  • Work closely with the marketing and sales team to ensure the Museum is meeting its visitation targets
  • Manage and support all staff to deliver on their work plans
  • Provide administrative and technical support for volunteer managers across the Historical Society's operations, as required.
  • Actively seek funding opportunities

Skills and experience

 

  1. Managerial experience, ideally in a museum, gallery or library environment.
    1. Experience in administration, contract and budget management, documentation and file management, forward planning, team co-ordination and time management. Familiarity with MYOB would be advantageous.
  2. Experience working with volunteers
  3. Experience in curatorial, public programming or events planning.
  4. High level interpersonal & communication skills
  5. Organised, motivated, flexible.
  6. An interest in social history and a willingness to learn about the social and cultural history of Cairns.
