An exciting opportunity exists for an experienced professional to lead a highly regarded and well-established industry representative organisation. 

The Organisation 

The Bus Industry Confederation (BIC) is the national peak body, representing the interests of bus and coach operators, manufacturers and parts and service suppliers in the industry. Since its establishment in 2002, the BIC has embodied a moving people strategy to foster better public transport outcomes and planning for liveable cities and regions.

The BIC is heavily focused on the development of policy outcomes that are based on sound research and is widely acknowledged as the lead organisation for consultation on public transport and people movement across federal, state and local government jurisdictions. A significant part of the BICs mandate is to represent bus and coach manufacturers and suppliers on national policy, technical and regulatory issues with the National Transport Commission (NTC), National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) and various other government agencies.

The BICs representation model also includes providing industrial relations advice and guidance to members and industrial advocacy through its industrial arm the Australian Public Transport Industrial Association (APTIA).

The Position 

  1. The Executive Director reports to a Council and Executive Committee operating under an approved constitution. The primary responsibilities will include:
  • leadership of the organisation and its small team of skilled staff developing policy and undertaking and commissioning appropriate research projects 
  • lead the strategic, commercial and political advocacy of the BIC
  • manage the operations of the BIC business units and secretariat 
  • oversee the financial planning, budget and strategic planning processes
  • work closely with the BIC Council, Executive Management Committee and sub-Committees to ensure appropriate governance standards are maintained
  • establish and maintain productive stakeholder relationships with politicians, government officials, relevant agencies, member and kindred associations and the media
  • prepare and present submissions to government 
  • publicly represent the BIC and industry via a wide range of media platforms 
  • develop new and maintain existing corporate and member partnerships 
  • serve on a range of government and industry boards, councils and committees 
  • promote a strong work ethic and culture of respect within the BIC and its staff. 

Applicant Skills, Competency and Experience

  • Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline.
  • Demonstrated experience in a leadership role.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development of strategy and policy.
  • High level advocacy experience. 
  • Strong fiscal, analytical and governance capacities. 
  • A background in or demonstrated understanding of the passenger transport industry and the moving people task.
  • Ability to work autonomously. 
  • Willingness to travel as required. 
  • Proven ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
