Rail Maintenance Supervisor

Our services cover the state of Western Australia and are conducted from our workshop, site support at clients sites, or field service from our fully equipped vehicles.

Finmec requires an experienced supervisor (Mechanical or Electrical) to manage rail maintenance on Earthmoving, Road Transport and Specialised Rail Tooling. This is offered as a FIFO or Residential Position on 5/2 4/3 or 8/6.


To principle duties and responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:

  • Ensure conformance with the Charter, the Level Documents, Code of Conduct and relevant statutory obligations. 
  • Ensure compliance with the requirements of the Rail Safety Act, and relevant Rail Procedures.
  • Developing and implementing rail maintenance plans and strategies in accordance with relevant procedures and industry best practice and standards. This includes management of parts and down time planning of equipment. 
  • Manage unplanned breakdowns to ensure equipment is back operable in a timely manner and breakdown reports (including damage reports) are completed. 
  • Provide input into the planning of rail works and the structure of the teams to enable safe and efficient execution of works. 
  • Supervision of contractor and sub-contractor groups to ensure technical and quality standards are achieved safely.
  • Ensure standards are adhered to and work is undertaken in a safe and efficient manner. Ensuring hazard/risk identification during establishment of execution methodologies, development of required controls and verification that identified controls are in place and working.
  • Perform site safety functions including reviewing and signing Task Based Risk Assessments (JHA), participating in on-site safety meetings and actioning findings identified through safety audits in a timely manner. 
  • Drive an improvement culture within the maintenance and wider renewals team specifically in the areas of safety and production. 
  • Single point of accountability at worksites under your supervision including management of events (hazards, near miss or actuals). 
  • Monitor and manage contractors/sub-contractors compliance with site access requirements. 
  • Prompt completion of supporting and reporting documentation and administration. 
  • Monitor maintenance work progress and contractor resource capability and capacity. 
  • Maintain accurate records of various contractors personnel and equipment on site to enable the Project Team to prepare timely and accurate reports. 
  • Deliver leadership in environmental compliance and ensure sub-contractors comply with environmental conditions and requirements. 
  • Report incidents and accidents and collate detailed incident, accident and injury statistics. 


The Successful applicant will have:

  • Demonstrated experience in leading workgroups and contractors to complete maintenance works (experience with maintenance of rail equipment is desirable) 
  • Risk management in maintenance works 
  • Maintenance of Rail- Track works equipment 
    • Development of maintenance strategies 
    • Development of labour team to complete planned and unplanned maintenance 
    • Hazard identification and rectification 
    • Logistical movements of equipment to facilitate maintenance 
  • Current full West Australian C class motor vehicle license or current equivalent Australian State. 
  • HR & MR License desirable. 
  • Leadership experience in maintenance of rail / mining equipment. 
  • Electrician or heavy diesel fitters trade certification desirable. 
  • Good communication, interpersonal and people management skills with a range of audiences. 
  • Computer literacy.
  • Good planning skills and the ability to oversee projects to successful completion. 
  • Administration and prioritisation including time management capability. 
  • Competent in reading detailed plans and elevations. 
  • Sound judgement including balancing competing issues. 
  • Ability to identify and prevent risks.
