Watco WA Rail Pty Ltd (WWAR) is a rail operator of freight trains in Western Australia. Watco is a family-based business established in 1983 in Pittsburg, Kansas with strong roots tied to Customer First Foundation Principles.

Due to recent changes in our business and expansion with a new contract we are now seeking two highly skilled and competent candidates with previous rail experience to work as a Field Service Technicians on locomotives and wagons.
These are both Full Time positions and will be based in Bassendean, Western Australia.  Individuals with Multiple Trade locomotive experience will be preferred.

Description of Function

You will be responsible for performing scheduled inspections, troubleshooting, repairs and preventive maintenance activities on locomotives in accordance with OEM maintenance instructions and best practice industry standards. You will need to have comprehensive skills in maintaining all aspects of a diesel electric locomotive. You will also need the ability to follow company guidelines and checklist while using mechanical aids, hand tools, power tools and precision measuring/testing tools. People applying for this Field Service Technician position will also be required to conduct scheduled and unscheduled maintenance activities on a variety of different wagon classes.

Key Responsibilities

Ability to read and comprehend written safety rules, procedure and safety manuals, government regulations, maintenance instructions, memos and other work-related information
Current knowledge on all OHS, and other safety requirements as applicable, and consistently working to ensure full compliance with all state agencies including but not limited to training, inspections, reporting
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form; and/or to apply principles of logic to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions; and/or to apply principles of rational systems to solve practical problems
Ability to effectively communicate instructions, directions, processes, procedures, safety rules and regulations to co-workers, supervisors, and others in written, oral, diagrammatic and schedule form
Ability to make independent judgments using sound reasoning skills and knowledge base
Ability to think and act quickly in responding to emergency and non-emergency situations
Ability to pass training and required testing of competencies
Ability to inspect locomotives, wagons or trains as needed
Ability to observe mechanical and electrical devices in operation and listens to their sounds to locate causes of trouble
Ability to dismantle parts of a locomotive to gain access to and remove other defective components using hoist, cranes, hand tools, power tools.
Able to drive and utilize Maintenance Service Vehicles (MSV) and/or Maintenance Recovery Vehicle mobile vehicles, maintain the vehicles and the equipment found on-board
Examine components to detect defects and imperfections, inspect used parts to determine suitability for re-use, be able to accurately measure rollingstock wheels using a variety of gauges, callipers, micrometres and other measuring instruments
Adjust functional parts of devices and control instruments.
Ability to operate power, pneumatic operated tools
Ability to take oil and cooling water samples from locomotives and perform daily service inspections

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:-

Candidates must be willing to undertake cross skilling in both locomotive and wagon maintenance practices as applicable
Possess and or acquire sufficient experience or equivalent working knowledge and understanding in a mechanical background.
Possess a valid drivers C class and heavy duty license.
Knowledge of and skills in applying basic Office of Rail Safety Regulator guidelines, company rules and procedures
Ability to effectively communicate instructions, directions, processes, procedures, safety rules and regulations to co-workers, supervisors, and others in written, oral, diagrammatic and schedule form
Ability to train other personnel on how to perform job-related duties and to provide training related to company regulations, rules, safety guidelines and preventive maintenance
Ability to make independent judgments using sound reasoning skills and knowledge base
Ability to work safely

Education:

High school education and minimum of 5 years actual hands on locomotive maintenance experience with preference given to candidates who have also maintained wagons.
