Vision Australia recognises that people who are blind or have low vision can face barriers when entering the workforce. You may have had fewer opportunities to gain work experience, or faced uncertainty from potential employers about how you will do your job and what changes they need to make in the workplace.
How can the Career Vision project help you
The Career Visions project will enable people who are blind or have low vision to begin a leaning pathway and develop practical skills, in support of positive employment outcomes. The project is being implemented by Vision Australia, and will be delivered from the Vision Australia Coorparoo office in QLD. This training is funded by the Queensland Government through its Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative.
The Career Visions Project will provide 6 trainees with the opportunity to complete selected modules of Certificate I in Business. This will include Job Preparation Skills components leading to improved core abilities and an increased level of vocational competency.
Trainees will have access and be supported by the highly specialized Vision Australia team including: Orientation and Mobility Specialists, Adaptive Technology Specialists, Orthoptists, Occupational Therapists and Employment Specialists. Trainees will be referred to Dress for Success to obtain suitable work clothing. Adaptive technology needs will be accessed on an individual basis.
What does being a Career Vision Trainees involve
This is a 26-week paid program consisting of completing selected modules of Certificate I in Business, a 10-week classroom based learning module, and a 16-week placement at a host employer. The trainee is required to have full time attendance for the 26-week program and be available to go to Vision Australia's office in Coorparoo QLD for 10 weeks, and then to the host placement employer's address for 16 weeks.
During the classroom based learning (10 weeks), successful candidates will be supported with supervision and career advice. While completing the work placement (16 weeks), Vision Australia will provide advice, information, mentoring and support to organisations involved.
At the completion of the 26 weeks, Trainees will:
- Earn a Certificate I level qualification in Business through TAFE Queensland;
- Gain practical experience in real work situations that align with their training;
- Complete paid work that can be included in their resumes;
- Receive a mix of career advice, job preparation skills and foundation skills.

- Basic to developed technology skills including use of the Microsoft Office Suite;
- Ability to reflect on own professional practice, analytical and problem solving skills;
- Sound written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
- Sound planning, organisation and time management skills.
- Ability to establish and build positive working relationships with a diverse range of staff and fellow students at all levels.
