The role: Based in Barton (ACT), the new role of Communications Manager, provides opportunity to improve current communications delivery methods and build on a fresh approach to advocacy. Complimenting existing practices, we are introducing focused and campaign driven advocacy programs that are based on deep research and enhanced member contributions. 

Reporting to the General Manager - Advocacy, this position is both strategic and hands on and requires a customer centric, collaborative and relationship focused approach. The purpose of the role is to:

  • Manage the Communications Team.
  • Lead and manage workflows and outputs from the Team, as well as overseeing external stakeholder engagement and relationship management.
  • Contribute to formulating communication and advocacy campaign strategy and providing high level advice to GM - Advocacy, Campaign Manager, and the AMA President and Vice President.
  • Work closely with the State and Territory AMA's in coordinating communications activity.

What it Takes: This role suits a seasoned communications professional with significant experience in leading and managing a communications function and a small team of professionals. Other must haves include:

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including experience in dealing and negotiating with a variety of stakeholders and the ability to deal with sensitive or contentious issues.
  • Excellent verbal communication with internal and external stakeholders to ensure a common understanding of information, issues and concepts.
  • Demonstrated experience in the development and delivery of a range of strategic communications activities and functions including campaigns.
  • Demonstrated and outstanding writing and editing skills.
  • Deep understanding of federal politics, in particular the health portfolio.
  • Demonstrated experience and strong network with journalists across press, TV, radio and online.
  • Experience providing high-level media support and advice to key stakeholders including senior executives on short-term and long-term strategies.
  • Deep experience promoting initiatives and policies through the media including campaigns.
  • Tertiary (bachelor and or masters) qualifications relevant to the role e.g. communications, media, journalism, public relations.
