A career in Painting and Decorating is so much more than just cutting in and rolling paint onto walls. You never know where you might end up, you are only limited by your imagination. As an apprentice you get to earn as you learn, with real hands-on experience from a Host Trainer combined with TAFE studies.

During your apprenticeship, you will have the opportunity to meet new people, work in a wide variety of job sites, and gain the professional skills that enable you to deliver excellent craftsmanship and superb finished results.

You may eventually choose to specialise in an area such as high-end interiors, timber finishes, decorative work or high-rise concrete building coatings. You may start your own business or enjoy a rewarding role with an established company. There are so many places this career can take you!

Eligibility requirements

Prior to applying, you must meet the eligibility requirements listed below:

  • 15 years or older
  • No longer at school        
  • Living or working in NSW
  • An Australian citizen, Australian permanent    resident, humanitarian visa holder or New Zealand citizen

How we help you

Master Painters Group Training Company specialises in finding employment for apprentices with experienced host trainers in the Painting and Decorating Industry. We do this by matching you with a host trainer who will provide you with on-the-job experience, while you earn an income. We support you through your entire apprenticeship and when you've completed your training, the Master Painters Association can  provide you with ongoing support and professional development as a Qualified Tradesperson.

The role of an apprentice

The job sites provide a wide variety of people and experiences, making it a wonderful and diverse trade. There is always something new to learn.

Working in the Painting and Decorating Industry often involves traveling to job sites, early mornings, working at heights, completion of formal and workplace based training.

Painters and Decorators may perform the following tasks:

  • Select and prepare paints to match colours by the addition of tints.
  • Brush, roll or spray paints, stains, varnishes and other finishes.
  • Wallpapering
  • Spray paint surfaces using a spray gun or other specialised equipment.
  • Apply decorative paint finishes such as stencils, colour glaze, graining, stucco, marbling and lettering.

Free training

Master Painters Association, in partnership with TAFE NSW has an exciting opportunity to undertake a Painting and Decorating pre-employment program. The program is available FREE to jobseekers who are interested in a career in the Painting and Decorating industry. Previous experience is not essential.

The pre-employment program runs for 2 weeks and includes 6 units of competencies from the Painting and Decorating certificate lll qualification (CPC30611 - Certificate III in Painting & Decorating)

Upon successful completion of the program you will be given credit for the units completed and an opportunity to apply for a full time Painting and Decorating apprenticeship through the Master Painters Association and its Group Training Company MPGTC Pty Ltd whilst continuing your studies at TAFE.
