Production Manager

Ainslie and Gorman Arts Centres

Hours: 38 hours/week (full time)

Remuneration: $65,000 plus 9.5% superannuation

Reports to: Director

Works with: Program Manager, Creative Producer, Venue Hire Coordinator, Venue Development Officer, Wedding & Corporate Events Officer, Facilities Manager and others.

Supervises: Casual event staff; volunteers and interns as necessary.


The Production Manager performs an essential role in the Ainslie and Gorman team, working closely with senior colleagues and the Director in a dynamic and fast-paced environment to enable the presentation of a diverse arts and cultural program within our heritage-listed facilities.

The Production Manager is responsible for event production and venue management at both centres. The role ensures all Ainslie and Gorman venues and events, and associated front-of-house and back-of-house equipment, systems and processes, can support the needs of clients, colleagues, and the community safely and efficiently. This includes event risk and technical assessment and approvals, technical set up and operation, as well as managing front-of-house: POS systems, bar inventory and casual event staff.


The Production Manager is expected to establish and maintain positive relationships with a variety of stakeholders and suppliers, including but not limited to, colleagues, artists, residents, technicians, suppliers and contractors. Supervising a high-performing team of casual staff is an essential part of the role.


Key responsibilities

Venue and Production

  • Provide production advice, assessment and approvals for prospective and confirmed projects and events at Ainslie and Gorman venues and, from time to time, held offsite.
  • With colleagues, coordinate and implement plans for venue use, resource use, as well as bump in and out schedules across the centres for a planned program of events, including AGAC core programs and community/corporate venue hires.
  • Manage WHS compliance for venues, equipment and resources, including maintenance schedules, liaising with the Facilities Manager, Maintenance Officer and Business Manager as required.
  • Conduct pre- and post-event checks to ensure venues and equipment are returned to pre-hire or standard state.
  • Inform the organisations asset register by provision of advice on equipment replacement/needs.
  • Attend and contribute to ongoing staff meetings including regular event assessment and production meetings.
  • Monitor and report on facility and maintenance budgets as required.
  • Obtain quotes and engage suppliers in accordance with the Ainslie and Gorman procurement policy and procedures
  • Ensure all necessary approvals, licences and accreditations are obtained for events and sighted for all external hires and contractors.
  • Create and maintain technical log specifications, including sound, lighting, A/V and rigging as needed.

Front of house

  • Manage front of house systems, including POS software (Kounta) and bar inventory, in cooperation with Administration Officers and the Programs team.
  • Review event sheets, duty manager reports and collate pre- and post-event documentation including following up on any comments or issues with relevant casual staff and colleagues
  • Supervise casual event staff including Duty Managers, box office and bar staff. Working with the Business Manager, recruit casual events staff bar/box office, duty manager and technical roles, ensuring casual staff are inducted and trained in their roles.
  • Liaise with external contractors to supplement casual staff team where required.
  • Manage casual staff event rosters and reconcile casual staff timesheets.
  • Assist in developing and reviewing relevant policy documents as required, and ensuring that our existing policies are observed.


Selection Criteria

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively to a wide range of people.
  • Demonstrated experience in production management.
  • Demonstrated experience in supervising event staff.
  • Ability to work autonomously but also in harmony with a small team to meet event deadlines.
  • Practical knowledge and application of Work Health and Safety standards in a performance venue and/or event-based environment.


Selection Criteria: Desirable

  • An interest in, and knowledge of the arts in Canberra.
  • Knowledge of front-of-house systems.
  • Qualifications in a relevant technical field, such as sound or lighting.
  • Certifications: First Aid, Working Safely at Heights, RSA.
