About the Company
Joining Far Northern Milling as the Production Manager represents an excellent opportunity to play a leading role in the exciting future of the Mossman Sugar Mill. The Companys vision for Mossman Sugar Mill is to become part of an integrated Bio-Refining processing facility aimed at producing a range of high value products from the sugar cane plant in addition to the traditional raw sugar and molasses products. The Companys future business strategy is focused on developing a Bio-Precinct adjacent to the Mossman Sugar Mill in order to develop a high value green product portfolio which will ensure a sustainable future for the sugar industry in the region.
Mossman Sugar Mill crushes sugar cane supplied by approximately 100 growers spread from the fertile Atherton Tablelands in the west, south of the coastal resort of Port Douglas and in the north fringing the World Heritage Daintree National Park. The sugar industry both from an agricultural and manufacturing perspective is a vital contributor to the economy of the Douglas Shire region.
Mossman Mills workforce consists of approximately 140 employees during the crushing season which typically spans from June to November each year and 85 employees for the remainder of the year when maintenance is performed.
About the Role:
Reporting to the General Manager, the Production Manager is directly responsible for all production aspects of the sugar mill, managing operational performance and efficiency, with key performance metrics in safety, quality, environmental compliance, cost, throughput and efficiencies. Your direct reports will be the Shift Supervisors who oversee a team of 45 employees, and the Control Chemist during the crushing season.
Establish and ensure agreed factory performance and efficiency targets are achieved by developing strategies that deliver maximum performance of relevant plant.
Manage and provide leadership for the production team.
Provide chemical and technical support in processing related matters.
Oversee laboratory operations and compliance with the Cane Analysis Program.
Management of workplace health and safety, and environmentally relevant activities within the department including meeting relevant statutory requirements.
Provide timely and accurate production data and analysis to the management team and production personnel.
Achieve on-going improvements in factory performance by developing and implementing agreed initiatives in operating, maintenance and capital plans.
Key Position Requirements:
Proven skills and experience in the management of a manufacturing operation.
Demonstrated cost management skills including the ability to prepare and review department budgets and monitor financial performance.
Proven leadership and people management skills.
Demonstrated ability to drive improvements to optimise production, plant reliability, safety and environmental performance.
Highly effective verbal and written communication skills; including the ability to deliver presentations, prepare detailed reports and proposals.
Proficiency in the undertaking of administrative and computer based tasks such as the use of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems and Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint to prepare and complete reports, budgets and presentations.
Desirable Position Requirements:
Proven leadership experience successfully managing production or processing operations in a sugar mill or other large industrial operation.
Diploma or tertiary qualifications in Chemical Engineering, Applied Science/Chemistry, or related discipline.
The Mossman Sugar Mill is located in the picturesque township of Mossman which is well positioned within the Douglas Shire region in Far North Queensland. Mossman which serves as a gateway to the World Heritage listed Daintree National Park is situated 80 kilometres north of the regional coastal city of Cairns and 20 kilometres of the coastal resort of Port Douglas.
The region is internationally renowned for its unique and pristine tropical environment which features lush rainforests, crystal clear rivers and long sandy beaches and is also situated in close proximity to the Great Barrier Reef.
