The Curtin Institute for Computation (CiC) was established to meet an increasing demand for computational modelling, data analytics, and visualisation. The CiC initiates and fosters collaborative, interdisciplinary research and education programs with researchers. One such collaboration is the Curtin Open Knowledge Initiative (COKI), a strategic project of the Research Office at Curtin, the Faculty of Humanities, the Curtin Institute for Computation, and the Centre for Culture and Technology.
The Curtin Open Knowledge Initiative (COKI) is developing a broad program of work on the theme of ‘open knowledge institutions’. The goal of our project is to develop tools and data that will allow universities to understand how effectively they are operating as open knowledge institutions; and to support strategic change in higher education and research. To date, the project has collected trillions of data points and terabytes of related content (structured, semi-structured and un-structured data) to be organised, linked, and understood.
Combining data science and a critical perspective we are addressing questions of how to collect and manage data at a large scale, as well as how sharing this data and analysis will effect the ecosystem.
Your new role
We are seeking a detailed orientated Data Scientist to join CIC team and the COKI project, to further the project goals through the application of data science, data engineering and software development. As the project progresses, there will be increasing opportunities for developing novel approaches for network analysis, natural language processing, machine learning and data visualisation.
Working with a range of large global data sets, performing quality assessments and analysis and creating derived datasets as needed
Working with other members of the COKI team and our partners to translate project goals into technical solutions
Developing python scripts for pre-processing large datasets, alongside SQL queries for large scale data linking
Developing a range of tools and techniques for analysing, linking, exploring and visualising our large global datasets in order to tell effect stories through data.
Working with the latest tools and services on public cloud environments.
Contributing to research activities such as grant development and writing publications
Opportunities for both writing engineering and data science blog posts to boost your public exposure and/or taking on product ownership responsibilities.
You will bring to the role
A tertiary qualification in a relevant quantitative discipline (e.g. Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Operations Research) with extensive relevant experience; Knowledge, Experience and Skills.
Proficiency in data science, statistics, mathematical modelling, and/or optimisation techniques.
Proficiency in at least one analytics scripting language (such as Python).
Experience working with databases and large datasets
Experience, or a willingness to quickly learn, the skills to work in Linux within cloud environments.
Outstanding analytical and problem solving skills.
The ability to work effectively as part of a team as well as autonomously.
The ability to articulate complex, technical concepts to non-technical clients and to consult and liaise with personnel across all levels and disciplines.
Demonstrated understanding of developments in software systems and algorithms where they apply to data science and operations research.
Well-developed written communication skills with the ability to construct clear and concise reports and correspondence.
A doctoral qualification in a quantitative discipline such as computer science, mathematics or operations research (desirable) or equivalent experience.
Given the projects global scope, an ability to speak multiple (human) languages is an advantage.
What we offer you
Agile and flexible working environment with great work life balance
The opportunity to grow, develop and diversify your own skill set
Competitive remuneration package with 17% Superannuation
Curtin University requires you to provide a cover letter and resume to include sufficient information and examples to allow us to assess your suitability for the role. We are interested to both hear about your specific technical experiences and your interests in the wider COKI projects.
